An Introduction to History
–
Students are introduced to the methods employed by historians to record, interpret, and narrate historical events, using primary sources, early cartography, and modern anthologies of history. The course takes a comparative approach by presenting historical events within their respective contexts as well as by placing them within a broader perspective to understand the relevance of history in today’s age. The concept of historical continuity is emphasized by an in-depth study of the development of early civilizations, their rise to power, and their subsequent degeneration and fall.

Beyond The Ferghana Valley
The Mughal Kings of India
The lush green valleys of Central Asia were the cradle of great warriors and founders of civilizations. Cruel emperors, pious kings, and scholarly princes, all left their footprints upon a vast territory stretching from the Ferghana valley in the Caucasus to the highlands of Ceylon. The course will focus on the geography of Central Asia and the lives of the Mughal kings, who called themselves Timurids, and who created one of the world’s grandest civilizations in the subcontinent of India.

Desert Winds
Revisiting The Levant
Over centuries, nay, millennia, the desert wind has told in a slow whisper stories from the vast and sandy plains of the Levant, leaving wrinkles on the golden dunes. From Alexander’s troops appearing like a fading mirage at Gaugamela to Desert Storm lighting up the sky like burning thunder – the human predicament has remained the same, while the desert winds that have forever whispered to us stories of the past, continue to do so, perhaps more than ever, re-shaping, like the sand dunes, the final destiny of man.
The course will look at some of the battles fought in the desert that have changed the course of history in an attempt to hear the stories of the past to gain an understanding of the events of today.
